Shirehampton Remount Depot

The Shirehampton Remount Depot was a major supply base in WW1 for the war-trained horses needed in great numbers to replace those lost at the front. Here Professor Coates takes full advantage of the work done around 2014 to restore the history of the Depot; and quotes copiously from the contemporary press, to give a full picture of the depot in operation and in dissolution.

Richard Coates was Professor of Linguistics at the University of the West of England, Bristol. He is President of the English Place-Name Society, and has written extensively on the place-names and dialect of the Bristol area. He is the author of ALHA booklet No. 24 Wilkins of Westbury & Redland.

  • Hi, how can I order a copy?
I found out through family history I had a relation who worked with the war horses in shirehampton.
    Many thanks.
